The Purpose of doing Sport

Watching the progress of Olympic Games these days, one question always pops up in my mind, when I watched the athletes performing in their event there: Is this all about sport?

If I am not wrong, I remember the President of World Olympic Council did mentioned in his opening speech that he wished all the athletes would do their best with sporting spirit, under the concept of fairplay and most of all ENJOY the Games.

The key word is ENJOYMENT.

These days, people are targeting at achievement. As if achievement is everything in sport, so much as the original meaning of participating sport is distorted. No doubt, achievement does enhance the status of elite athletes. But please remember, the majority of people participating sports, they are NOT elite players.

Then, does a coach only focus on performance or achievement on his athletes? Where is the practical value of SPORTS FOR ALL?

Good point. The Olympic Creed or Pledge in 1908 also stated at the end that "...the key point in life is not to win but also to have fought well" meaning that in life do what you can to the best of your abilities eg. in sport. However,in these modern times, people only focus on winners and overlook the many thousands who are not elite athletes. Olympics these days in my opinion seem to be armchair entertainment and which country can bring in the most golds. Are the athletes enjoying themselves ? Only if they WIN. See our swimmers, everyone in SGP remembers Tao Li but Shaun Tay did a PB and who remembers him ? Who were the other swimmers ?
